TikTok Is Banned in India — What to Grow Instead
TikTok has been blocked in India since 2020, so buying TikTok engagement from an Indian account is buying reach into an audience you cannot serve. Where that attention actually went, and what to buy instead.
TikTok has been blocked in India since June 2020 and remains unavailable, so growth bought on a TikTok account does nothing for an Indian audience — there is no one on the other side. The attention moved mainly to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, which is where an Indian creator's budget belongs. Buying TikTok engagement only makes sense if you are deliberately targeting viewers outside India.
This one comes up constantly in Indian search and almost every SMM panel happily sells against it anyway. TikTok has been blocked in India since June 2020. It has not come back. Buying TikTok engagement from India, for an Indian audience, is buying a number on a platform your audience cannot open.
That is worth saying plainly before anything else, because there is an entire Indian reseller market still quoting TikTok rates to buyers who assume the platform is reachable.
When buying TikTok engagement does make sense
There is a legitimate case, and it is narrow:
- You are targeting viewers outside India — the diaspora, or an international audience for English-language or music content.
- You post from a non-Indian account or through a business presence that is not geo-restricted.
- Your monetisation is international: brand deals with non-Indian companies, an overseas product, affiliate revenue from foreign traffic.
If that is you, TikTok services work normally and the TikTok services page has the live rates. If it is not you, the rest of this page is more useful.
Where the Indian audience actually went
The short-video attention did not disappear in 2020 — it relocated, fast, and mostly to two places:
| Platform | What it absorbed | Why it matters for buying | | --- | --- | --- | | Instagram Reels | The largest share, plus the creator economy and brand-deal market | Best default for an Indian creator; full service catalogue available | | YouTube Shorts | Long-tail discovery and monetisation-focused creators | Slower, more filtered, but the only one with a real payout path | | Moj, Josh, others | Regional-language and tier-2/3 audiences | Little or no third-party service market |
For most Indian creators the practical answer is Reels, with Shorts second if monetisation is the goal.
What to buy on Reels instead
The mechanics that made TikTok work are the same ones that drive Reels, which is why the content format transferred so cleanly:
Views, early. Distribution is decided in the first hours by watch-through in a small test audience — and the humans in that test audience see the view count while deciding whether to keep watching. A reel sitting at 40 views is fighting from behind. This is the cheapest thing in the catalogue and the closest equivalent to what TikTok view buying did.
Likes, in proportion. A view count with almost no likes reads as bought. Five to ten percent of views is the band that reads as a video that genuinely landed.
Followers, only for the profile problem. If reels get distribution but the profile does not convert the visit, that is a follower-count problem. If the reels are not getting distribution at all, followers do nothing for you.

If monetisation is the actual goal, Shorts
Reels pays Indian creators comparatively little. YouTube Shorts has a real revenue-sharing path, which is why creators chasing income rather than reach end up there.
The catch is the same one everywhere on YouTube: the threshold is watch time, not subscribers, and nothing purchasable produces watch time. Buying YouTube subscribers in India covers what the subscriber count does and does not do for a monetisation application.
The old account question
An Indian TikTok account from before the ban still has its followers. They are simply unreachable — the account is intact on TikTok's side and invisible on yours. There is no migration path; the follower list does not transfer to Reels or Shorts.
The honest answer is that it is a sunk asset for an Indian audience. Rebuilding on Reels with the same content is faster than anything else available, and the same budget that would have gone to TikTok goes further there because the audience is actually present.
