Rent Receipt Generator
Enter the tenant, landlord, address and monthly rent, choose the months, and download ready-to-sign rent receipts for your HRA claim, two to a page.
Needed by employers only when rent is above ₹1,00,000 a year.
What a rent receipt for HRA should show
- Tenant’s and landlord’s names
- The rent amount, in figures and in words
- The month the rent is for and the date it was received
- The address of the rented property
- How it was paid: cash, UPI, bank transfer or cheque
- The landlord’s signature, and their PAN when the rent is over ₹1,00,000 a year
- A revenue stamp for cash payments over ₹5,000
Each receipt this tool makes includes all of these. Print the PDF, have the landlord sign each receipt, and keep a copy.
HRA, rent receipts and the tax regimes
HRA exemption is available only under the old tax regime. If the new regime works out cheaper for you, rent receipts do not reduce your tax. Compare both with the income tax calculator, entering your HRA exemption as part of the old regime deductions.
| Situation | What employers usually ask for |
|---|---|
| Rent up to ₹3,000 a month | Often no receipts at all; check your employer's policy |
| Rent up to ₹1,00,000 a year | Rent receipts or the rental agreement |
| Rent above ₹1,00,000 a year | Receipts plus the landlord's PAN |
Leaving out the PAN above ₹1 lakh a year
Employers can refuse the HRA exemption without it.
Paying rent to a parent without records
Rent paid to a parent can be claimed if it is really paid (ideally by bank transfer) and the parent declares it as income.
Unsigned receipts
A receipt needs the landlord's signature, and a revenue stamp when the rent was paid in cash above ₹5,000.
