Compress Image to 50 KB

Reduce a photo, scan or signature to 50 KB or less, ready for exam, job and government application forms. The tool keeps the highest quality that fits and shows the exact file size before you download.

Compress by
Maximum file size

Keeps the highest quality that fits; shrinks the image only if it has to.

Smaller dimensions are the biggest saving for large photos.

Getting a photo under 50 KB

Online forms often set a strict size limit for photos and signatures. Choose your image above and it is compressed to 50 KB or less automatically. The tool starts at the highest quality and lowers it step by step until the file fits; if the photo is very large, it is also reduced in pixel size, which keeps it clearer than squeezing a huge image into a tiny file.

  • Check other requirements too. Many forms also ask for specific dimensions (for example 200 × 230 pixels) or a format. Use the converter to change the format, and the Resize option here to set the size.
  • Crop first. A tight crop of the face or signature keeps more detail within the same file size.
  • Scan signatures in good light on white paper: a clean background compresses far smaller than a grey, shadowed one.

Getting the smallest files

  • Resize large photos. A 12-megapixel phone photo is about 4000 pixels wide; a website rarely shows images wider than 1920. Setting a maximum size is often the single biggest saving.
  • Use the right format. Photos belong in JPG or WebP; screenshots, logos and graphics with flat colours in PNG. WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG and works in all current browsers.
  • Compress from the original. Each round of lossy compression loses a little more detail.

Private by design

Compression runs in your browser using WebAssembly versions of MozJPEG, libwebp and OxiPNG, the codecs behind Google’s Squoosh (licences). Your images are never uploaded. Compressed files are saved without EXIF metadata, so camera details and GPS location are not shared.

Common mistakes

  • Saving photos as PNG

A photo saved as PNG is often five to ten times the size of a good JPG with no visible benefit. Choose JPG or WebP under "Save as".

  • Compressing a screenshot as JPG

Text and sharp edges in screenshots blur and ring as JPG. Keep screenshots as PNG; the palette compression here shrinks them just as much.

  • Squeezing a huge photo into a tiny file

A 4000-pixel photo at 50 KB looks blocky. Reduce the pixel size first (the File size mode does this for you) and the result stays clear.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make sure the image is under 50 KB?

Choose your image and it is compressed straight to 50 KB or less: the tool tries the highest quality first and only lowers quality, then size, until the file fits. The new size is shown before you download.

Is 1 KB 1,000 or 1,024 bytes here?

1,024 bytes, the way Windows, macOS Finder in most views, and most online forms count. A 50 KB result is at most 51,200 bytes, so it passes forms that use either definition.

Will the image still look sharp?

The tool keeps the highest quality that fits 50 KB. At very small sizes a large photo is also reduced in pixel size, which keeps it clear instead of blocky. For passport-style photos and signatures this is normally what forms expect anyway.

Can it change the format too?

Yes. Forms usually ask for JPG, which is the default for photos. Choose JPG under "Save as" if your image is a PNG or WebP and the form needs JPG.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser, so documents such as ID photos and signatures never leave your device.
