Image Compressor

Make JPG, PNG and WebP images much smaller without visible loss, or squeeze them under an exact size such as 50 KB for an online form. Compress up to 30 images at once and compare before and after.

Big savings with no visible difference for most images.

Smaller dimensions are the biggest saving for large photos.

Getting the smallest files

  • Resize large photos. A 12-megapixel phone photo is about 4000 pixels wide; a website rarely shows images wider than 1920. Setting a maximum size is often the single biggest saving.
  • Use the right format. Photos belong in JPG or WebP; screenshots, logos and graphics with flat colours in PNG. WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG and works in all current browsers.
  • Compress from the original. Each round of lossy compression loses a little more detail.

Private by design

Compression runs in your browser using WebAssembly versions of MozJPEG, libwebp and OxiPNG, the codecs behind Google’s Squoosh (licences). Your images are never uploaded. Compressed files are saved without EXIF metadata, so camera details and GPS location are not shared.

Common mistakes

  • Saving photos as PNG

A photo saved as PNG is often five to ten times the size of a good JPG with no visible benefit. Choose JPG or WebP under "Save as".

  • Compressing a screenshot as JPG

Text and sharp edges in screenshots blur and ring as JPG. Keep screenshots as PNG; the palette compression here shrinks them just as much.

  • Squeezing a huge photo into a tiny file

A 4000-pixel photo at 50 KB looks blocky. Reduce the pixel size first (the File size mode does this for you) and the result stays clear.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my images get?

Typically 50–80% for photos from a phone or camera and 50–70% for PNG screenshots and graphics, at the Balanced level. Images that were already compressed shrink less; if one cannot get smaller, the original is kept.

Can I compress an image to an exact size, like 50 KB?

Yes. Choose "File size" and pick or type the maximum. The tool finds the highest quality that fits and only reduces the pixel size if it has to.

Will compression reduce quality?

At the Balanced level the difference is very hard to see; use Compare on any image to check. PNG at Best quality is completely lossless.

Which format gives the smallest file?

For photos, WebP is usually smallest, then JPG. For screenshots and graphics, PNG with colour reduction. Pick a format under "Save as" or keep the original.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser with WebAssembly versions of MozJPEG, libwebp and OxiPNG. Your files never leave your device.

Is metadata such as GPS location removed?

Yes. Compressed images are saved without EXIF metadata, so camera details and location are not shared.
