The engagement rate formula
Engagement rate = (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100
Averaged over recent posts, usually the last 10 to 12.
This is the version brands, agencies and influencer platforms use when they assess a creator, because every number in it is public. Variations add saves and shares, which are stronger signals of interest but visible only to the account owner, or divide by reach instead of followers.
Example
- Followers
- 12,500
- Average likes + comments per post
- 480 + 36 = 516
- 516 ÷ 12,500 × 100
- 4.13%
Which version to use
| Version | Formula | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| By followers | (likes + comments) ÷ followers | Media kits and brand pitches: anyone can verify it |
| Including saves and shares | all interactions ÷ followers | Your own tracking: saves and shares predict reach |
| By reach | all interactions ÷ accounts reached | Judging content quality: how the people who saw it reacted |
Use one version consistently. Comparing a reach-based rate with someone else’s follower-based rate is meaningless.
What a good engagement rate is
There is no single number. Engagement rates fall as accounts grow, because larger audiences include more casual followers, and they vary by niche and format. Published benchmarks from analytics companies disagree with each other for the same reason. The useful comparisons are with accounts of a similar size in your niche, and with your own rate over the past few months.
Common mistakes
Measuring one viral post
A single post that took off says little. Average the last 10 to 12 posts, or a month of posts, for a rate that reflects the account.
Mixing formulas
A rate by reach is usually several times higher than a rate by followers. Say which one you are quoting, especially in a media kit.
Comparing across sizes
A 9% rate on 2,000 followers and a 2% rate on 500,000 followers can both be healthy. Compare like with like.
