Best Free Background Remover in 2026: What Is Actually Free

remove.bg, Adobe Express, Canva, Photoroom, the tools built into your phone and computer, and Boostlix compared on what you really get free: resolution, watermark, sign-up and whether your photo is uploaded.

For a free, high-resolution cut-out with no watermark and no sign-up, use a tool that runs in your browser, such as the Boostlix Background Remover, or the one already on your device (Lift Subject on iPhone, Remove Background in Windows Paint or macOS Preview). remove.bg is free only for small previews (up to 0.25 megapixels), Canva's remover is part of its paid plans, Photoroom's free exports carry a watermark, and Adobe's is free with an Adobe account within daily limits.

Do it now, free and without uploading anything: Background Remover, Passport Photo Maker, Image Resizer, Image Compressor.

"Free background remover" can mean five different things: free at preview size, free with a watermark, free a few times a day, free with an account, or actually free. Here is what each popular option gives you without paying, checked on 9 October 2026.

We make the Boostlix tool, so weigh our row accordingly; the rest come from each service's own help pages.

The one already on your device

If you only need one cut-out, check what you already have:

  • iPhone and iPad: open the photo, touch and hold the subject, then choose Copy or Share. This is Apple's Lift Subject feature.
  • Windows 11: open the image in Paint and choose Remove background.
  • Mac: open the image in Preview and choose Tools, then Remove Background.

They are free, private and fast. What they lack is control: you cannot easily choose a white or coloured background, crop to the subject or batch several photos.

Online tools, and their catch

remove.bg is quick and accurate, but free downloads are small previews. Fine for a profile picture, too small for print or a marketplace listing. Full resolution needs credits.

Adobe Express (Firefly) gives full-resolution results free, but you need an Adobe account and there is a daily limit for free users.

Canva has a good remover inside its editor, but its help centre lists it as a paid-plan feature.

Photoroom is built for product photos and has strong templates, but free exports carry a Photoroom watermark; the paid plan removes it.

Boostlix Background Remover

The Boostlix remover runs the AI model inside your browser, so your photo is never uploaded. It is free with no account and no watermark, and keeps images up to 4096 pixels on the longest side, which is full size for a standard 12-megapixel phone photo (larger photos are scaled down to that). You can export a transparent PNG or put the subject on white, a colour or a blurred background, and crop to the subject.

Where it is weaker: the first time you use it, the browser downloads the AI model, which takes longer on a slow connection, and older phones process more slowly than a server would. On very fine hair against a busy background, paid services can be cleaner, so compare on your own photo.

How to choose

  • One quick cut-out: the tool built into your phone or computer.
  • High resolution, free, without signing up or uploading: a browser-based tool such as Boostlix.
  • Hundreds of product photos with templates: a paid product tool such as Photoroom.
  • Already designing in Canva: Canva Pro.

Getting a clean result with any tool

  • Use a photo where the subject is sharp and stands apart from the background.
  • Avoid backgrounds the same colour as the subject's edges.
  • Shoot product photos in even light, without hard shadows.
  • Check the edges at full size before using the image; zoom in on hair and fine detail.

For marketplace listings, see product photos for Amazon and Flipkart; for ID photos, the passport photo maker removes the background and sizes the photo in one step.

Questions this raises

Which background remover is completely free?

The ones built into iPhone, Windows Paint and macOS Preview are free with no limits, and so is the Boostlix Background Remover, which also needs no account. Others are free with conditions, such as low resolution, a watermark, a daily limit or an account.

Is remove.bg free?

For small images. remove.bg's help centre says it is free for low-resolution images up to 0.25 megapixels (about 625 × 400 pixels) for personal use; full resolution and commercial use need credits or a subscription.

Is Canva's background remover free?

Canva's help centre says the background remover is included with paid plans, so you need Canva Pro or a trial to use it regularly.

Do free background removers upload my photo?

Most online ones do, because the image is processed on their servers. Tools that run the AI in your browser, like the Boostlix remover, and the tools built into your phone or computer, process the photo on your own device.

Which is best for product photos with a white background?

Any of these can cut out a product cleanly. For marketplaces you also need the right size and a pure white background, so a tool that can export straight onto white at full resolution saves a step.
