Image to Text (OCR)
Turn a photo, scan or screenshot into editable text. Choose the language, copy the result or download it as a text file. Text recognition runs in your browser, so the image is never uploaded.
Getting the best results
- Choose the right language. Tesseract reads one script at a time well; for Hindi or Malayalam documents with some English, keep “Also read English” ticked.
- Photograph straight on, in good light. Slanted, curved or shadowed pages lose accuracy fastest.
- Crop to the text. Busy backgrounds and pictures can be read as stray characters.
- Screenshots work well. Small screenshots are enlarged automatically before reading.
Printed text is read far more accurately than handwriting, which OCR handles poorly. Always proofread names, numbers and amounts before using the text.
From PDF or scan
To read text from a scanned PDF, turn its pages into images with PDF to JPG (choose 300 DPI), then add each image here. If the PDF was made from a Word file, the text may already be selectable: try copying it first.
Private by design
Text recognition runs in your browser with the open-source Tesseract engine. The engine and language data (a few megabytes) are downloaded the first time and then cached; your image is never uploaded.
Common mistakes
Wrong language selected
Reading a Tamil document as English produces nonsense letters. Pick the document’s language.
Low-resolution photos
Tiny or blurry text cannot be recovered. Take the photo closer, or scan at 300 DPI.
