How words and characters are counted
A word is any run of letters or numbers between spaces, the way Microsoft Word and Google Docs count: “e-mail” and “don’t” are one word each. Text in languages written without spaces, such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai, is split into words by your browser’s language rules. Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji or a Hindi conjunct counts once.
Reading time assumes 238 words a minute, the average for adults reading non-fiction; speaking time assumes 150 words a minute, a comfortable pace for a talk or video script.
Common length limits
| Where | Limit | Note |
|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | 280 characters | Links count as 23; some scripts count double |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 characters | About 125 show before “more” |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 characters | About 210 show before “see more” |
| Google meta description | ≈155 characters | Longer ones are cut off in results |
| Page title | ≈60 characters | Google truncates by width, not a fixed count |
| SMS | 160 characters | 70 if it contains emoji or non-Latin letters |
