Product Photos for Amazon and Flipkart: White Background and Size Rules

What Amazon and Flipkart require from a main product image, and how to turn an ordinary phone photo into a compliant one: pure white background, the right size and framing.

Both marketplaces want the main image on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), with the product alone, filling most of the frame, and no text, logos or watermarks. Amazon needs at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side for zoom; Flipkart asks for square images of at least 500 × 500, and sellers commonly use 1,000 × 1,000 or larger. Remove the background, set it to white, crop to the product, then resize to a square.

Do it now, free and without uploading anything: Background Remover, Image Resizer, Image Compressor.

The main image is the one shoppers see in search results, and it is the one marketplaces check most strictly. A listing whose main image breaks the rules can be suppressed from search until it is fixed. The good news: you do not need a studio. A clear phone photo and three free tools get you a compliant image.

What the marketplaces require

Requirements change and differ between categories, so check Amazon Seller Central and Flipkart Seller Hub for your category. The core rules for the main image have been stable for years:

FormatJPEG preferred; PNG, TIFF, GIF acceptedJPEG or PNG

Secondary images (the rest of the gallery) are far more flexible: lifestyle photos, close-ups, dimensions and packaging are all welcome.

Step 1: Take a usable photo

  • Shoot in daylight near a window, or under two lamps placed either side, to avoid harsh shadows.
  • Put the product on a plain surface that contrasts with it: a sheet of white paper for dark products, a coloured cloth for white ones. Contrast makes the cut-out cleaner.
  • Fill the frame and keep the product in focus. Tap the product on your phone screen before taking the photo.
  • Shoot straight on, at product height, and take a few angles while you are set up.

Step 2: Remove the background and make it white

  1. Open the background remover and choose your photo.
  2. Use Any subject for most products. If the product is on a plain backdrop already, Plain background is instant.
  3. Drag the before/after slider and check edges, especially around handles, straps and transparent parts.
  4. Choose White as the background and tick Crop to the subject.
  5. Tick Sharp edges for products with crisp outlines, like boxes, bottles and electronics. Leave it off for soft items such as clothing, fur and plants.
  6. Download as JPG.

The first time, the AI model downloads once (about 99 MB) and then stays cached; your photo is not uploaded.

Step 3: Make it square at the right size

Marketplace galleries are square, and a square main image keeps search results tidy.

  1. Open the image resizer and choose Custom size.
  2. Untick "Keep aspect ratio" and enter 2000 × 2000 (or 1000 × 1000 if you prefer smaller files).
  3. Choose Fit whole image with a Solid colour background set to #FFFFFF. This places the cropped product in the centre with white space around it, instead of cutting any of it off.
  4. Download as JPG.

Because the product was cropped tightly in step 2, it will fill most of the square, close to the 85% that Amazon asks for. If it looks too small, crop the original photo tighter and repeat.

Step 4: Keep files light

Large files slow down your catalogue uploads and, on your own store, your pages. Run the final images through the image compressor at the Balanced level: product photos usually shrink by half or more with no visible difference. If a marketplace sets a maximum file size, use File size mode and enter it.

Checklist before you upload

  • Background is pure white, with no grey patches at the edges.
  • Only the product is in the main image: no props, hands, text, logos or watermarks.
  • The product fills most of the frame and nothing is cut off.
  • At least 1,000 pixels on the longest side (Amazon), square (Flipkart).
  • Saved as JPG with a sensible file size.

Common mistakes

MistakeFix
"White" background that is really light greySet the background to White in the background remover rather than relying on the photo.
Product too small in the frameTick Crop to the subject before resizing, so the product fills the square.
Jagged or haloed edgesShoot against a contrasting surface, and try Sharp edges on or off to see which looks cleaner.
Text or badges on the main imageMove offers, badges and size information to the secondary images.
Blurry zoomStart from a sharp photo and export at least 1,000 px on the longest side; 2,000 px is safer.

For your own website or social media, the same cut-out works on any background colour: use Colour or Blur in the background remover, and the resizer's presets for Instagram and other platforms.

Questions this raises

Does the background have to be pure white?

For the main image, yes. Off-white or light grey that looks white to the eye is often flagged. Pure white means RGB 255, 255, 255, which is what the White option in the background remover produces.

What size should product photos be?

For Amazon, at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side so zoom works; around 2,000 is a common choice. For Flipkart, square images of at least 500 × 500, with 1,000 × 1,000 or more widely used. Check Seller Central and Seller Hub for the current limits on your category.

Can the product have a shadow?

A soft natural shadow under the product is generally fine on Amazon if the background stays white. Avoid dark or coloured shadows and anything that looks like a second object.

Do the extra images also need a white background?

No. The rules apply to the main image. Secondary images can show the product in use, details, size charts and lifestyle scenes, which often convert better.

Are my product photos uploaded when I use these tools?

No. The background remover, resizer and compressor all run in your browser, so unreleased products and client photos stay on your device.
