Background Remover

Remove the background from any photo with AI that runs on your own device, so your image is never uploaded. Download a transparent PNG, or put the subject on white, a colour or a soft blur.

How it works

The background is removed by an AI model that runs inside your browser. The model is downloaded once from Hugging Face and cached; after that it starts straight away, even offline. Your photo is never uploaded to Boostlix or anyone else, which matters for ID photos, client work and unreleased products.

On devices with a capable graphics chip the model runs on it and a photo takes a few seconds. Otherwise it runs on the processor, which takes roughly 30 to 90 seconds; “People (fast)” takes about 10 seconds, and “Plain background” is instant on any device.

Which mode to use

ModeBest forDownload
Any subjectProducts, people, pets, cars, food, logos: anything in front of a background99 MB once
People (fast)Portraits, selfies and team photos on older phones or slow connections7 MB once
Plain backgroundProducts or logos photographed on white or one solid colourNone, instant

“Any subject” uses BiRefNet, an open-source model built for precise cut-outs. “People” uses MODNet, a portrait model that handles hair well but only works on people.

Product photos for online stores

  • White background: Amazon, Flipkart and many marketplaces require a pure white (#FFFFFF) main image. Choose White, tick “Crop to the subject”, then download as JPG.
  • Consistent catalogues: crop every product to its subject, then use the image resizer to bring them all to the same square size.
  • Smaller files: run the results through the image compressor before uploading.

Getting clean edges

  • Use a sharp, well-lit photo where the subject stands out from the background.
  • Tick “Sharp edges” for products and logos with crisp outlines; leave it off for hair, fur and soft edges.
  • Drag the compare slider and zoom in on your screen to check fine details before downloading.
  • For a logo on a white or coloured background, “Plain background” is instant and pixel-exact.

Common mistakes

  • Saving the result as JPG and expecting transparency

JPG cannot store transparency; transparent areas become white. Download PNG for a see-through background.

  • Busy backgrounds the same colour as the subject

A brown dog on a brown sofa is hard for any model. If you can, retake the photo against a contrasting background.

  • Using "People" mode for products

The people model only understands people. Use "Any subject" for products, pets and objects.

Frequently asked questions

Is the background remover really free?

Yes. No signup, no watermark, no credits and full-resolution downloads. It is free because the AI runs on your device rather than on our servers.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Your browser downloads the AI model once (from Hugging Face) and runs it locally. The photo itself never leaves your device.

Why does it download a model the first time?

The AI that finds the subject is a file of about 99 MB (7 MB for the faster people-only mode). It downloads once and is cached by your browser, so later photos start straight away.

How do I get a white background for Amazon or Flipkart?

Remove the background, choose White, tick "Crop to the subject", and download as JPG. Marketplaces generally require a pure white (#FFFFFF) background for the main product image.

Why is it slow on my phone?

On devices without a capable graphics chip the model runs on the processor, which takes roughly 30 to 90 seconds. "People (fast)" mode is much quicker for portraits, and "Plain background" is instant for products on white.

What image size can I use?

Up to 50 MB. Very large photos are processed at up to 4096 pixels on the longest side, which is plenty for websites, marketplaces and print.
