How to Record Google Meet on Laptop or Phone (Free and Paid Ways)
Which Google accounts can record a Google Meet, how to record on a laptop, Android or iPhone, where recordings are saved, why the Record button is missing, and how to record free with a recording bot.
To record a Google Meet with Google's own tool, open Activities, then Recording, then Start recording. It only works on eligible paid Google Workspace editions or Google One with 2 TB or more, on a computer or Android device, and for the host or people the host allows; the video is saved to the organiser's Google Drive in the "Google Meet" folder. On a free Gmail account or an iPhone, use a recording bot such as Boostlix Notes: paste the Meet link, admit the bot, and the recording is ready when the meeting ends (10 meetings a month free).
Google Meet can record meetings, but only on some accounts and only for some people in the meeting. Here is who can record, how, and what to do when you cannot. Google's own rules below are from its help page, checked on 19 October 2026.
Who can record with Google Meet's own button
| Can record | |
|---|---|
| Plans | Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise editions, Essentials, Workspace Individual, some Education licences, Google One with 2 TB or more |
| Free Gmail | Not listed |
| Devices | Computer or Android device (iPhone not listed) |
| People | The host, co-hosts, or people in the host's organisation, if the host is allowed to record |
| Saved to | The organiser's Google Drive, "Google Meet" folder |
An administrator also has to allow recording for the account.
How to record on a laptop
- Join the meeting in Chrome or another browser.
- Click Activities (the shapes icon at the bottom right), then Recording.
- Choose whether to include captions, then Start recording and confirm.
- To stop, open Activities, Recording, then Stop recording, or leave the meeting when everyone else has gone.
The file takes a few minutes to appear in Drive. The organiser and the person who started recording get an email with the link.
How to record on a phone
On Android, on an eligible plan, tap the three dots (More options), then Recording. On iPhone, Google's help does not list recording. A screen recorder on the phone usually records your screen but often misses the other people's audio.
When you cannot record: use a recording bot
A recording bot joins the meeting as a visible guest and records from a server, so it does not depend on anyone's Google plan or device. It has to be admitted like any guest, and good ones announce themselves in the chat.
With Boostlix Notes:
- Sign in with your email (free, no card).
- Paste the Google Meet link, before or during the meeting.
- Admit "Boostlix Notetaker" when Meet asks.
- When the meeting ends, the video recording is on the meeting page and you get an email.
The free plan records 10 meetings a month, of any length, to watch online for 7 days. Pro adds the transcript, minutes of meeting by email, downloads and 90-day storage.
Before you press record
Tell everyone, ideally at the start of the meeting and in the invite. Recording laws differ by country and state, and some require everyone's consent. If anyone objects, do not record.
