Record Google Meet

How to record a Google Meet for free, on any account

Google Meet's Record button only appears on some paid plans, and only for the host or people the host allows. If you do not see it, a recording bot is the simplest way to record the meeting, with everyone able to see that it is being recorded.

Option 1: Google Meet's own recording

  • Plans: Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise editions, Essentials, Workspace Individual, some Education licences, and Google One with 2 TB or more. Free personal Gmail accounts are not on the list.
  • Who: the host, co-hosts, or people in the host's organisation, and only if the host's account is allowed to record.
  • Where: on a computer or an Android device; Google's help page does not list iPhone.
  • Saved to: the organiser's Google Drive, in the "Google Meet" folder, and linked from the Calendar event.
  • Everyone in the meeting is told when recording starts and stops.

Option 2: a screen recorder on your own device

A screen recorder (on a laptop, or the screen recorder on a phone) records what your own screen shows. It needs you to be in the meeting on that device the whole time, phones often miss the other people's audio, and nobody in the meeting is told. Always tell participants when you record.

Option 3: a recording bot (works on any account)

A bot joins the meeting as a visible guest, records it from a server and gives you the file afterwards. It does not depend on anyone's Google plan, you do not need to keep your laptop open, and it announces itself in the chat.

  • Sign in to Boostlix Notes with your email (free, no card).
  • Paste the Google Meet link, before or during the meeting.
  • Admit "Boostlix Notetaker" when Meet asks.
  • When the meeting ends, the recording is on the meeting page and you get an email. Pro adds the transcript, minutes and downloads.

"Recording unavailable" in Google Meet: why

  • Your account (or the host's) is not on an eligible plan, or the administrator has turned recording off.
  • You are not the host and the host has not allowed others to record (host management).
  • You are on an iPhone, or joined by phone dial-in.
  • You are on a free personal Gmail account. A recording bot works in all of these cases, as long as someone admits it.

Questions

Can I record Google Meet without the host's permission?

Meet's own Record button follows the host's permissions. A bot like Boostlix Notes still has to be admitted by someone managing the meeting, and announces that it is recording. Recording people without their knowledge can be illegal; always tell participants.

Where do Google Meet recordings go?

Meet's own recordings are saved in the organiser's Google Drive, in the "Google Meet" folder, and linked from the Calendar event. Boostlix Notes recordings are on the meeting page in Notes.

How do I record Google Meet on my phone?

Meet's recording works on Android on eligible plans, not on iPhone. With a bot, it does not matter what device you are on: add the link from your phone and the bot records from our server.

Is it free?

Boostlix Notes records 10 meetings a month free, of any length. Google Meet's own recording needs an eligible paid plan.
